Richard Schmalensee is the Dean, Emeritus, of the MIT Sloan School of Management and Howard W. Johnson Professor of Management and Professor of Economics, Emeritus, at MIT.
He served as a member of the US President’s Council of Economic Advisers from 1989 through 1991, where he had primary responsibility for domestic and regulatory policy.
Professor Schmalensee is a leading scholar in industrial organization and its application to public policy. He is the author or coauthor of more than ten books and over one hundred articles. He served as co-editor of the Handbook of Industrial Organization (volumes 1 and 2), a standard reference.
Professor Schmalensee has provided expert economic testimony before federal and state courts on antitrust, intellectual property, and other matters. His experience includes prominent cases such as the classic US v. Microsoft (1998 for Microsoft). As a consultant and scholar, he is deeply knowledgeable about the digital economy, payment cards, telecommunications, energy, and environmental issues.
Professor Schmalensee is one of the pioneering scholars of the economics of multisided platforms. He is the author or coauthor of award-winning books and numerous articles on this subject, including the award-winning Matchmakers: The New Economics of Multisided Platforms (with David S. Evans). Several of his books and articles were cited by the US Supreme Court in its seminal American Express decision on the application of the rule of reason to platform businesses.
